Kanaan sets best four-lap average on Fast Friday

As the wind began to drop and the track temperature dropped, the 2013 Indy 500 winner embarked on a qualifying mock race and clocked laps of 231.392, 230.419, 230.668 and 229.589 mph. That meant an average of 230.517 mph which propelled him to the top ahead of fastest rookie David Malukas by far.

Twice he completed four brave laps with averages over 230 in Dale Coyne Racing with HMD-Honda, with an average of 230.286 mph being his best effort.

Teammate Takuma Sato posted the fastest single lap of the day – a 232.789mph effort – but he felt too much downforce had been removed and had to back out of turn 3 on lap 3, dropping his average to the fifth best.

Sage Karam set the fastest time for a Chevrolet driver, setting an average of 230.114 in Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, just a hair ahead of Pato O’Ward’s early efforts for Arrow McLaren SP-Chevy.

Jimmie Johnson’s second qualifying simulation came while the wind was still blowing extremely strong, and he outdid himself with the sixth-best average, 229.093 mph, considering that mentally he was bouncing back from a big hit against the wall at the session start time https://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/johnson-has-lucky-escape-at-indy-after-smacking-turn-2-wall/10307688/

Meyer Shank Racing-Honda Indy 500 winners Simon Pagenaud and Helio Castroneves finished sixth and seventh on the qualifying simulations, but lost in the middle of the 227. Marcus Ericsson was eight ahead of the three Team Penske-Chevrolets which did not come out in the second part of the session.

Sato’s fastest lap was almost 1 second faster than Rossi’s, albeit in very different conditions.

Meanwhile, it was notable that Kanaan’s fastest lap only placed him eighth in single-lap times, and it was his consistency that earned him first place in qualifying times.

Fast Friday sees BorgWarner turbos in Chevrolet and Honda engines cut from 1.3 to 1.5 bar, an increase of around 80bhp, to allow teams to shed downforce and check their qualifying potential for this weekend.

But today wind gusts of up to 38mph were recorded which gave the cars a headwind on the front straight, pinning the nose and causing oversteer at Turn 1 and then pushing the cars into a drift into turn 2 before descending the back straight with a tailwind.

The order of the first qualifying races on Saturday, which will start at 11:00 a.m., is as follows:
